Behind-the-Wine: Part 1

November 13, 2015 – Behind every ALDI wine, there’s a story. Today, we’re uncorking a behind-the-scenes look of our Broken Clouds Chardonnay. Learn how our wine goes from vineyard to glass and stay tuned next week for part 2.

Growing Region & Climate
The Sonoma Coast is one of the premier growing regions for Chardonnay in the world.  Coastal temperatures remain cool throughout the summer, which is a key component in growing world class Chardonnay. The coastal range of mountains, east of the Russian River, provides a barrier that protects the region from hot weather during the summer months. The region receives about 40 inches of rain a year and thus most vineyards need little irrigation throughout the year.

The 2014 vintage is one of the more successful chardonnays because of the steady, mild temperatures that persisted throughout the summer. From it emerges fruit that has a luscious texture, ideal balance, and profuse aromatics, making it one of the best vintages of the decade.

Wine Production
The grapes in Broken Clouds Chardonnay are harvested in the early morning hours and whole-cluster pressed. A large percentage of the wine is then barrel fermented to achieve richness and bring out notes of vanilla and spice. Barrel fermentation happens when the juice from the grapes sits in large wooden barrels and over time, the yeast turns the sugar in the grapes into alcohol. The remaining wine is fermented in stainless steel for a touch of vibrant acidity, which helps create a beautiful balance.

This chardonnay delivers an intense fragrance featuring peaches and figs, pretty spice notes and subtle floral quality. The wine is perfectly balanced with luscious flavors of apple and melon, tropical fruits and hints of citrus.  It has a long finish, vanilla and spice notes and just the right amount of body and lushness.

Fun Fact: Broken Clouds Chardonnay has a top-rated sibling. The Broken Clouds Pinot Noir was recently honored with a 2015 Wine Enthusiast Rating and Best Buy – 91 points – as well as with a 2015 Beverage Testing Institute World Wine Championship Rating – 87 points, Silver Medal, Best Buy. Share this post and tell your friends to pick up Broken Clouds Pinot Noir at their local ALDI.
