A Dash of Snow

December 15, 2016 – This time of year, there’s nothing quite as magical as the first snowfall. It’s the perfect backdrop for holiday cooking, family movie nights by the fire and outdoor winter fun with the kids. But did you know snow can serve a purpose in your kitchen, too? It’s true! Freshly fallen snow is a wonderful addition to wintry recipes. Here are a few of our favorites:

Peppermint Mocha Frosted Candy Cane Cupcakes
Big, fluffy flakes been falling all day? Head out into the yard and round up some snow! Add 1 cup to the baking mix and half a cup to the frosting to give these cupcakes a lighter texture.

Holiday Cranberry Fizz
Make your holiday mocktail a little merrier by serving it over freshly fallen snow. Loose snow will work just fine, but you can create mini-snowballs to drop into your drink, too.

Homemade Snow Ice Cream
All you need for this homemade treat is fresh snow, milk (condensed or regular) and vanilla extract. Easy as 1-2-3 and sweet as can be.

not good if you’re in a metropolitan area… too much pollutants in the air and snow…
however, if you’re out in the northwoods somewhere away from the thongs of people and vehicles… why not..

Snow ice cream brought back good memories. Growing up ice cream was a treat we couldn’t afford very often. Loved it when it snowed because we could have snow ice cream every day until it melted. Too bad we didn’t have an Aldi’s back then.

My grandmother and mom always made us snow ice cream when it snowed. It is now something I’ve done for my kids over the years, and something they always remember. We use one beaten egg, 1 cup milk, 1 cup sugar, vanilla and a dash of salt. Then add snow to proper consistency. Yes, it’s a raw egg. No we never had an issue. Then we add toppings of our choice. Always a hit!
